What is cylindrical grinding?

Cylindrical grindingIn our shop we have many types of machines to help us work on equipment of all sizes as well as individual machine parts. Our shop includes a cylindrical grinder, which is a machine that is used to help shape the outside of an object with a specific technique. The concept for cylindrical grinders was first introduced in the 1830s and improved upon for many decades after. To qualify as cylindrical grinding, there are four essential conditions that must be met:

  1. The object rotates constantly
  2. The grinding wheel constantly rotates
  3. The grinding wheel is fed towards and away from the work
  4. Either the work or the grinding wheel is traversed with the respect to the other.

There are many applications for cylindrical grinding, as it is a very precise method of shaping objects. Cylindrical grinders have contributed in many ways to the development of new technology and scientific progress. The automotive industry and the military are two great examples of industries that benefit from applications of this technology.
